The story for "Centuries" was the inspiration of Patrick Stump, who brought the idea of a David vs Goliath story while the band was on the Monumentour, alongside Paramore.
Just as their tour with Paramore was over, the band released a trailer video for the song on the fourth of September, being played first on the eighth that month on BBC Radio 1. One day later, it was made available internationally through a digital download version. MTV were the first to praise the song, Under the Gun following by calling Fall Out Boy up-coming "bonafide pop stars" thanks to this single.
With an infusion of electronic elements and a great charm to it, "Centuries" has been generally received well by the critics. The official music video was released in October and presents the band as gladiators, having other religious elements and even a giant fight in it.
Being a great radio success, it also got to place 16 on the Pop Songs charts in January On the Billboard Hotit got as high as twelfth place after 5 months, a feat that made the band a top 10 act on the Artist charts.

The official video features four gladiators doomed for some unknown reason prior to entering the Colosseum in Rome for the entertainment of the crowds. They are given two lengths of rope, a stone, and a cloth by a mysterious figure.
This is followed by scenes of a unknown figure opening her arms to a crowd, a lady with two lions behind her, a "christ" figure, and a decadent pope spreading his arms showing several ladies sitting at his feet. The viewers are then introduced to the ostensibly "crowd favourite", a large, muscular man who destroys the four without much ado, cheered on by the crowd and a laughing emperor.
In desperation, the four use their items to create a sling, which is then used to slay the warrior. The video ends as another, unknown challenger enters the ring while the emperor laughs.

Centuries song meanings. Add your thoughts 15 Comments. My Interpretation This song sounds a lot like it's in the POV of a school shooters or it's about them. How many of them have written or have said that they want to be remembered forever?
This whole song sounds like being remembered for something notorious. No Replies Log in to reply. There was an error. They know that it was horrible but it was told wrong. Worse than it actually was, and they will be remembered for something a lot worse that it was. They are no longer the alternative, emo-punk band they used to be, FOB are now much more mainstream and poppy- and that's okay.
It also sounds like 'heavy metal' could have influenced the band, and led to the development of their signature earlier sound love Andy Hurley so much. The bit about not stopping til the world knows your name might be about having to eventually change your sound as a band to conform to mainstream musical interests and sounds, so there is almost a sense of inevitability about it all.
I agree with ten in the sense that the song may well describe an event that was described much worse than it was, and it could be the change in sound and approach to music.
That's my 2 cents Song Meaning Its from the point of view of school shooters. Some legends are told Some turn to dust or to gold But you will remember me Remember me for centuries And just one mistake Is all it will take We'll go down in history Remember me for centuries Hey yeah, oh hey, hey yeah Remember me for centuries Lots of school shooters want to be remembered.
They don't want to be just another of the countless ordinary anonymous kids there are. They want to be something special. Mummified my teenage dreams No, it's nothing wrong with me The kids are all wrong The stories are off Heavy metal broke my heart 'Mummified my teenage dreams' means that they've given up all of their dreams.
They've just accepted that they can't have that. A lot of school shooters say they were bullied or felt left out, and that's what that part means. The kids and there stories about them were wrong. The heavy metal bit is sarcasm, as the Columbine Massacre was blamed on Marilyn Manson by some, and obviously this is ridiculous.
The shooter feels betrayed, and is angry that their friend fixed themselves and they couldn't. Some legends are told Some turn to dust or to gold But you will remember me Remember me for centuries And just one mistake Is all it will take We'll go down in history Remember me for centuries Hey yeah, oh hey, hey yeah Remember me for centuries And I can't stop 'til the whole world knows my name 'Cause I was only born inside my dreams Until you die for me, as long as there is a light My shadow's over you 'cause I am the opposite of amnesia And you're a cherry blossom You're about to bloom You look so pretty, but you're gone so soon This is about how the shooter craves recognition, and feels like they're only relevant in their daydreams.
The shadow bit is about the actual shooting, and the amnesia bit is to do with the way your life is supposed to flash before your eyes before you die.A gladiator-themed music video was created. The single reached No. The song was also the band's fourth top ten hit and first in eight years, since " This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race " in In"Centuries" was nominated for the Kerrang!
